DIY Laundry + Linen Spray

linen sprayWhile aiming to eliminate chemicals from daily beauty products, you also might consider using unscented laundry products, too. Ingredients like fragrance, chlorine, ammonia, sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens are often found in laundry detergent and dryer sheets and, unfortunately, these chemicals can remain airborne in your home, topically irritate skin, and irritate your respiratory system. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the air inside the typical home is 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside.

There is a natural solution to freshening up your linens that involves just a few ingredients. Extracted oil from flowers, as used in Aromatherapy and essential oils, is nature’s remedy for insomnia, relaxation, digestion, memory and even just to simply add an aroma to a room without leaving chemicals behind.

Mix up a linen spray by filling up a dark glass bottle with vodka. Vodka dissipates well and won’t stain fabric like an oil will. Dark glass will protect the essential oil from sunlight. For a 4oz bottle, add 10 drops of Lavender essential oil. Shake well before using and be sure to label your bottle. Spray on linens or around the room to naturally deodorize and add a fresh, natural scent to laundry.

Replace dryer sheets with dried lavender flowers. Simply fill a muslin bag with lavender flowers, a few cotton balls, and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Tie up well and toss into the dryer with your laundry. After a few uses, add more essential oil to the flowers or cotton balls to revive the aroma.
