Sometimes drinking water is not enough. The absorption of water by your body’s cells is dependent on sodium, which is an electrolyte. Yes, your body needs sodium! But, it must be in an important balance with another electrolyte, Potassium.
Water is attracted to electrolytes, and is then transported via osmosis to our cells which the body uses to regulate blood volume, body temperature, lubricate tissues, nutrient and oxygen transportation, saliva and bile for digestion, to name a few.
Electrolytes include calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and chloride, and are responsible for homeostasis, fluid balance in our body, and are needed to electrically send and receive messages throughout our body. An imbalance of electrolytes can show up as irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, changes in blood pressure and dehydration.
So, water needs electrolytes and electrolytes need water. This smoothie is rich in sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, and is my go-to for hydrating my body and skin.
In a blender, combine:
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut water
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1/2 banana
